Win the battle against bulge with Meso-Lipo Therapy by ReeAge Clinic, Bangalore
If you are no couch potato and try your best to eat healthy (with PMS-excused binges) but still feel you are more flabulous than fabulous, then it may be time to take a look at mesotherapy. I first heard about mesotherapy four years ago from a friend who was thinking about trying it. We were the same in terms of being frustrated with certain parts of our bodies that had accumulated stubborn pockets of fat, and even if we were quite active and did our best to avoid evil (albeit delicious) food, we lamented on how we still felt “jiggly with it.” I did some research and what attracted me to meso was that it was non-invasive and had no down time. I went for four sessions despite being told it only had a 30 to 40 percent efficacy rate, some patients reacted quite well to it, while some had no visible change whatsoever. Sad to say, I was grouped in with the latter, and felt like I would just have to learn to love my love handles, so to speak.
Bumping into an acquaintance at work last November prompted me to take another look at mesotherapy. She had given birth to her second child and although she was quite lean, there were still parts of her that refused to bid farewell to the fat that she had gained while pregnant. She swore by mesotheraphy and her doctor, Aivee Aguilar-Teo of NU U Asia. Since there is no harm in having a consultation, I made an appointment the week after. I had a lot of questions because of trepidation toward meso (since it didn’t work before) and Dra. Teo patiently explained to me what I could expect from giving it a second chance but, she warned, mesotherapy or in her case, meso-lipo therapy would only be effective if I continued to exercise regularly, watch my diet and increase my intake of water as it would certainly speed up my metabolism.
As a quick backgrounder, mesotherapy was developed in 1952 by Dr. Michel Pistor and meso-lipo therapy which falls under it uses medically formulated micro injections given into the mesoderm, or the fat layer which may help in ridding targeted areas of undesired pockets and bulges of fat. In my case, I was advised by Dr. Teo to start off with my tummy area and if I took to the treatment well (once a week and a minimum of 5 sessions) then I could move on to other problematic parts. I lay on the bed as she ‘marked’ me with a felt tip pen and showed me her meso “gun” and proceeded to (as I have now coined) ‘poke’ me. For those who are afraid of needles and are not vain enough to tolerate the slight discomfort when having a series of shots, this is not for you. To be honest, I barely felt the needle going in and out and was done in under 15 minutes. Next step was to have an Accent treatment which made use of radio frequency (heat) massaged on to my body in order to help spread the medicines and to further tone and tighten the skin.
Ironically on my way out, I bumped into a relative who was also going to start her first session of meso and we promised to keep one another updated with the progress. The next day, she called me to say that she had shed five pounds after her session but had experienced some bruising on the parts where she was “poked.” I, on the other hand had not had any bruising but no weight or inch loss either; I had committed to at least five sessions so I promised I was going to be patient. I remained faithful to my weekly treatments and even moved on to have my inner thighs and my bra line fat meso’d, and developed some bruising eventually, and, at one point, an allergic rash. All of this, Dr. Teo explained were normal reactions and after two to three sessions depending on how my body was reacting, she would adjust the dosage and the ingredients put into my personal fat melting cocktail. I remained optimistic and checked my inch lost and weight loss every week.
It was on the day after my fifth treatment that I had a very, very pleasant surprise. I gazed into my full-length mirror and realized that my tummy bulge had certainly flattened out and I was more shapely. My waist (which was always my problem area since I was a teenager) had actually reduced in size and, even more dramatic my back fat or “wings” was practically gone. I excitedly pulled out clothes from my closet that I didn’t have the guts to wear since they were a bit more revealing and of a more body hugging cut, and they fit perfectly, no uncomfortable adjusting to be made. Bouyed by my appearance, I signed up for five more sessions with my sights set on a weekend in Boracay, excess fat-free.
Although I am now a believer, I have to agree with Dr. Teo’s advice that meso is not for everyone. “I really interview meso candidates with regard to their medical history and their expectations, says Teo. “It’s not for those who have hyperthyroid, are hypertensive or diabetic, but it is definitely a safer alternative to liposuction and is something that you can do every once in a while when you need spot treatments.” Priced at around P3,500 per area, it is regarded as a reasonable quick fix.
It is important to note that there may be other side effects that I personally didn’t experience and that it is not a cure all especially if one is not disciplined enough to be active and to watch their diet, but suffice to say, for those who have tried everything (health wise) getting ‘poked’ is certainly one way of getting into flirting shape without breaking the bank.
